Yep, dastardly irony. Yesterday in my blog I said "No, I did not skip my ... workout. (With less than 8 weeks left to race day? Are you kidding?)" And I meant it. But in this full moon (which I have now decided has been the cause of all of my craziness and nothing seeming to go quite right this week - minor troubles popping their heads up at every corner), I should have known not to tempt fate. Fate it seems has a sense of irony (to borrow a line from The Matrix movies).
I had blood work to do this morning to re-check my thyroid and cortisol levels because 2 months ago my thyroid appears to be within normal parameters, but my cortisol levels were very high. Of course, the blood work was done the week after the weight discussion with Mr. Darcy meaning I was a bit, well, overly emotional. The doctor ordered a recheck and after my internet research about all the things high cortisol could mean (every thing from anxiety disorders to cancer to just plain unexplained levels), I figured I should definitely get it rechecked.
I had my swimsuit on, my bag packed for the gym, my breakfast for after the bloodwork (since my doctor wanted me to fast beforehand) gear for my drills. I was tired but determined. I told myself if I got in the pool I'd feel less tired after a bit and I'd be adding miles to my tank for the 70.3. I was ready and willing.
Unfortunately, even with my scheduled appointment the full moon took it's effect after I tempted it with my statement yesterday. The appointment took too long and if I went to swim I would be seriously late to work. At first I thought I'd be able to go at lunch time, until I remembered that I have a chiropractor appointment that is using up my lunch break. I unwillingly am having to skip my swim today. Not a happy camper about that.
At this point, there really is not much I can do about it but blog and register my complaint with our dastardly friend, Irony.
In other news, Ladybug really cut back on her tantrums for most of this week... until this morning. It's not so bad when it's not every day and it's in small bits. Of course, she's having 1-2 potty accidents each day, usually because she's using whether she goes to the bathroom to exercise some sort of control over things and then realizes right as she can't hold it any longer that she can't hold it any longer and pees a bit before making it to the potty. If she continues this today, I'm going to tell her that I don't care if she goes to the potty but that the other little kids might not want to play with someone that smells like pee pee and that they might not let her move up to a new class room if she doesn't use the potty, and let ther know the choice is all hers. I'm already enduring enough pee to frustrate me, so if a little reverse psychology works more power to me. I just have to get Mr. Darcy on board too.
Angelfish has, all in all, stopped whining... thank goodness! She has been super sweet and has returned to loving on her Mommy. This morning she wanted to go with me for my blood work and when I told her that they were going to have to stick a needle in my arm to get the blood she said, "I like it!" I think she might become a doctor. Angelfish knows the word for stethescope and what it is used for, likes to look at cuts and ask daily if they are feeling better (until they are gone), has a good bedside manner, likes the pop up books at the book store about the human body that show the organ systems and internal stuff, and likes to wash her "hands" by washing with soap all the way to her elbows and sometimes almost to the elbow. If that doesn't scream "I'm gonna be a doctor when I grow up," I'm not quite sure what does. With our family history, a cardiologist would be good to have around.
My parents are in town and as always are a big help. Just this morning Nanna folded laundry and washed sheets, Poppop did dishes, changed the water in Angelfish's flowers (she asked if she could buy some at Costco this weekend and we let her since she had been so good all weekend long - she chose peach colored roses), and went to the grocery. I always tell them that they don't need to do any housework, but they like keeping busy.
Last night we had a birthday celebration for Nanna (even though her birthday isn't until Monday), and the girls loved giving her their gifts. Nanna was a big sport and shared the slinky bracelets that Angelfish gave her with the girls, and fawned over the stuffed monkey that makes monkey noises that Ladybug gave her. Ladybug did a great impression of the monkey too. I think Nanna might have to watch out because Ladybug really loves that monkey!
Tomorrow is a rest day, and Sunday I have a brick consisting of a 45 mile bike followed by a 6 mile run. It will be the most mileage I've ever done in one day, so I'm a little nervous but I'll be with Ryan (and any other team members that decide they want to join us) so that will calm the nerves a bit. I just don't like doing those long distances by myself if I can help it... besides it's much more fun to have someone to join you in self-torture, I mean, self-improvement!
So let's hope the full moon and it's friend Irony will be busy elsewhere this weekend!

The Best Laid Plans and Revisions
I had the best laid plan in the world for this morning. I was going to rise at 4:30 am, eat, set the trainer up, do my 1.5 hour ride, run for 1/2 an hour and return just in time for the little ones to wake, sleepy eyed and adorable as they do each morning. It was going to be perfect timing.
Fate, it would seem, had other plans. I sometimes wonder what it is that attracts the god of mischief to my daily life. Of course, sometimes the mischief is fun... this morning was a mixed bag. I woke at 3:45 am to the feeling that someone was staring at me. Lo and behold, Ladybug was standing at the side of the bed staring at me through the darkness. I said her name and put my hand on her bottom and sure enough, pee! So, I was up and we went to the bathroom for her to potty and to change. Then she insisted she had to have pajama shorts - not pajama pants, mind you, but pajama shorts - all of which were in the chest of drawers in the bedroom she shares with her sleeping sister. Not wanting to wake said sister, I said no. This led to crying and wailing and perhaps even some gnashing of teeth, although I might have been the one gnashing the teeth, it's hard to tell it was so early. Being desirous of at least a few more moments of sleep, I caved. By this time, Mr. Darcy had woken up and was trying to calm Ladybug down also. Finally, quiet. And then I literally had the feeling that right as I was finally about to sleep again the alarm was going to go off. Just as I had the thought, the alarm went off.
Up again. This time getting ready, eating breakfast, setting up the trainer. Angelfish comes out looking worried and the moment she sees me, she lifts her arms up to be picked up. I pick her up and soothe her and bring her to the bathroom to use the potty. We talk a little and it turns out that she had a bad dream. I can't quite understand what she's trying to explain but evidently there was a bad dream involving the carpet. I take her to her bedroom and lay down with her for a bit, and she asks for a story. So I tell her a story about a guardian angel just for her that is friends with her Mommy and with God & who looks out for her. She starts to fall asleep. Then we hear Ladybug out of the bedroom with her Daddy in tow talking in a very loud voice. I jump up to get her away from the door but Angelfish stays in the bed, so I thought she was asleep. It's not even 5 am yet!
Ladybug is hungry because she heard me eating cereal, and "you should have closed the bedroom door all the way." To which I replied, "I'm up this early because you want me to have at least one day on the weekend off so there are no interruptions to family life. So be nice." Grumpiness abounds at that hour of the morning. I get on the bike at 4:47 am. (I should explain that our alarm clock is set 15-20 minutes ahead of the actual time to ensure we get where we need to go on time.) Ladybug eats her cereal, discovers my during training nutrition and tries to get me to eat some, and I tell her that I'm not going to eat any just yet because I haven't been on the bike very long. Then she wants to know if I'm almost done. I told her that I still have quite awhile to go. Mr. Darcy ushers her off to the bedroom again to try to get some sleep.
Not even 20 minutes pass and Angelfish appears again, but this time with a sly smile on her face. She asks where Ladybug is and I tell her that she's in the bedroom with Daddy because she couldn't' sleep and that she can go in there too. About 5 minutes later, Mr. Darcy appears and gets the "Sleeping Beauty" video. Evidently, the girls watch the video and Mr. Darcy tries to get some sleep. I'm still riding away on the trainer. All works out in the end, but what a fiasco. Angelfish and Ladybug never went back to sleep and Ladybug raised some more Cain at some point while I was still on the bike, but after inquiring if all was well, I was told it was under control.
The trainer included 1 leg drills. I was supposed to do 6, alternating legs each minute. I accidentally did 8 because I wasn't thinking about it and started minute 7 with the left leg and then it dawned on me 30 seconds in, at which point I decided I didn't want to be uneven. (Yes, Coach, I know you read my blog. Turns out yesterday was supposed to be 3x500 negative splits not 2x750, which I remembered wrong from my workouts and so I told on myself in my blog... my brain is not necessarily the best that early in the morning.) Whether 6 or 8, those suckers are hard! Much easier with the right leg than the left. By the end I was able to have a somewhat smooth minute on the right side, but not as much on the left side. Then the rest of the 1.5 hours on the trainer. Something about using the trainer is harder for me than riding on the road, and I certainly was rather sweaty by the end of it.
The 1/2 hour run was actually pretty good, but resulted in my becoming even more sweaty. I was completely drenched by the end of it, but felt good. I did about 2.4 miles in 30 minutes. Not a world record, but rather good for me especially after completing 1.5 hours on the bike just prior. I was pleased, and thrilled to find that I could have gone farther. (Despite the neighbor walking his dog who during my last 2 minutes of the run when I was supposed to be in a lower zone that I should keep up the pace - note to self, I need to get Coach or Mr. Darcy to help me set my heart rate monitor so I can actually train in the various heart rate zones. I told the neighbor I would run faster but it was the end of my 2 hour workout.)
I could use a good nap and some caffeine, and I'm really hungry at the moment, but other than that it all turned out nicely.
As for revisions, it has to do with my plotting for a European adventure. After looking at prices for airfare overseas (well, actually, the taxes and fees associated with overseas travel that turn a $298 airfare into $660), I am now plotting for a Northwestern US/Canadian adventure. Much less pricey (especially since it looks like we can get 3 of the 4 tickets for "free" via points and sky miles), and still something that sounds like fun. Not to mention the discovery of nonstop air travel from Orlando to Seattle, which settled some minds... although a decision has not yet been fully rendered. See Seattle, visit some family (if they're available) when we're there, and venture up to Vancouver as well. The ability to cross another state and a Canadian province off my list of places to go before I die to boot. There is hope.
Still waiting on the tri bike. Called the shop yesterday and they said they thought it would have arrived on Tuesday so they were hoping it would arrive yesterday and they'd call when it was in. No call. It will arrive eventually, I guess. I am just ever so excited.
In other exciting news, Ladybug kept her underpants dry all day yesterday! Day #2 in the victory of the unified forces against the potty training resistance. Let's hope we can go for more! The funny part is that Angelfish is 99.8% potty trained but we have to reward her as well for keeping it up because we can't chance her defection to the potty training resistance. The war of the bladders continues!

Well Meaning People Can Be Evil
I got a call from my Mother yesterday. She means well but has a personality that can be as abrasive as sandpaper... the coarse kind. Good Ol' Mom starts by asking if I have time and I tell her I'm about to go get the girls from daycare and head to SWIM practice. And she tells me,
"I'm worried."
"About what, Mom?"
"You."
"Me? Why?"
"Because you're too heavy. You're doing all this exercise and you look heavy and you weigh too much."
And she continues. "Your butt looks bigger and your stomach sometimes looks like you're pregnant from the side."
She eventually tells me that she thinks I have a metabolic problem and that she kept gaining and gaining weight no matter what she did and she was always told that she just didn't know how to push back from the table. And that she will always be honest with me. To which I tell her, there is something to be said for tempering what you say. The problem is, I haven't gained any weight. I gained weight right around our move when I stopped working out with my personal trainer and we were eating out alot. But since I started training for triathlons in September I have lost 6 1/2 pounds and am wearing a 6/8 instead of a 10/12. Granted that is not alot, but I also had no muscle mass and now I have some. I'm not perfectly proportioned. I'm still not my ideal weight, but I have an endocrine system problem. The doctor has told me that there are studies that show that women with what I have who have children often cannot get the last 15-20 lbs off after having children. I am exactly 2o lbs heavier than before I got pregant with twins. It's not rocket science. Mr. Darcy says it's an excuse and I should stop making excuses.
Well, I workout and I eat healthy. Then Mr. Darcy tells me "maybe you're just eating too many calories... it's really a simple formula - burn more than you take in and you lose weight." While I realize that my Mother is concerned and means well, and that Mr. Darcy probably does too, there are proper ways to discuss these things that are not akin to running into someone with a mac truck at a high speed. I had to force myself to eat dinner last night because I couldn't even look at food after these conversations. I'm hungry now and don't want to walk into the kitchen to eat, but I know I have to or I will cause my metabolism to slow down even more.
I've done calculations with formulas from sports nutritionists and books and they say I should be eating 2500 calories but I'm eating 2000 calories. Mr. Darcy says this is proof that I'm eating too much because I should have lost more weight. Maybe so or maybe just maybe, I'm gaining muscle mass. Mr. Darcy says I can't just continuously be gaining muscle mass, but at the same time I think I still am. Who knows.
All I really know is that I don't need to be having these conversations (especially not an abrasive manner) 2 1/2 weeks before the biggest race and the most physically strenuous thing I have done in MY ENTIRE LIFE. It's all I could think about during my swim practice yesterday. I did hit one point where I wasn't thinking about anything during the swim and that was great. But right out of the pool, I was thinking about it again.
And then this morning on my run... I was supposed to do 7 miles but due to a miscalculation I ended up only doing 6.7 miles (oh well, it's close enough for today)... I had to stop and walk (albeit for only about 1/2 a mile total). Not because I couldn't run or was in pain, but because I was crying. It's really hard to run and cry and same time. It screws up your breathing and causes a lot of snot production. All I could hear was what they were saying over and over in my head and nothing I told myself could get it out. So I finally told myself to just get it all out, to get out all of the hurt feelings, all of the feelings of not being good enough for the people who love me, the idea that people won't see me as a good person but just a lazy @ss because they see me as "heavy," the feeling that no matter what I do there is always something that I am a complete and utter failure at (in this case getting myself skinny enough). I told myself that I needed to get it out so that I wasn't carrying this stuff with me for my race. I told myself that I needed to get it out because while I was letting myself walk right then, it wasn't going to happen on race day. So meltdown now instead of later. And then I made myself run the rest of the way and kept telling myself that even if I was fat, I could run (what I thought was) 7 miles. Not to mention be projected to do a 34 minute 1500 (just under 1 mile) swim, and bike 25 miles... and sometimes I've even done more than that... Like a 45 minute swim followed by a 20 mile bike. Or a 25 mile bike followed by a 6 mile run. I may not look pretty doing it but I can do it.
So I've decided that there will be no more discussions of how much I weigh, how much I eat, how I look, whether I am "heavy," whether I do or do not have a metabolic problem between now and the race. I don't need to hear it. I don't want to hear it. I want to hear that I am awesome. I want to hear that I CAN SWIM, BIKE, RUN. I want to hear that I am a good mother and a good wife. I want to hear that I am a good friend. I want to hear that I am good at my job. And that's about all I want to hear between now and 2 days after my race. I want to race, race well, and celebrate the fact that I will have swum, biked, and ran over 30 miles (31.93 miles to be exact) in one day and that I finished in an upright position with a smile on my face. And then people can be as well meaning as they like. And I'll still be able to say "yes, but can you do almost 32 miles in one day?"
Afterwards, maybe I'll go see an endocrinologist to see if I have metabolic problems and maybe I'll see a sports nutritionist to get an expert to tell me the number of calories and the distribution among what foods I should eat. But unless you're an endocrinologist or a sports nutritionist, step off because I'm not looking for amateur hour. I'll be too busy training for my next race and if I'm "heavy" then oh well.
"I'm worried."
"About what, Mom?"
"You."
"Me? Why?"
"Because you're too heavy. You're doing all this exercise and you look heavy and you weigh too much."
